Phnom Penh, October 16, 2024 – The specialized police force of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Protection of Minors Department has apprehended Kamarotin Suhaimi, a section manager at the Khmer Islam School located in Russey Keo District. The arrest is linked to alarming allegations of sexual harassment and abuse involving a young female student, following information that surfaced on social media on October 10, 2024.
According to the Department of Anti-Human Trafficking and Protection of Minors, a thorough police investigation resulted in the discovery of four female victims from the Khmer Islam School. The victims included two 15-year-old girls, one 14-year-old girl, and one 13-year-old girl. Kamarotin Suhaimi, 33, faces serious charges of defamation and rape in connection with these disturbing allegations. Notably, it has been reported that two of the victims had previously lodged complaints, while the others have yet to formally report the abuses.
As the investigation progressed, four additional witnesses came forward to assist the police with vital information pertaining to the case, highlighting the importance of community engagement in addressing such grave issues.
On October 15, 2024, police brought Suhaimi in for questioning. However, he reportedly did not confess to the allegations and appeared to be evading responsibility for his actions. Following the interrogation, the prosecutor at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court mandated that Suhaimi be detained as legal proceedings are set to commence.
